January 28 & February 4, 2015: 5:45 – 6:45

Many of us experience sensations of stress in our bodies during meditation. The January workshops with Mark Taylor will use techniques of somatic awareness—movement, touch, breath, and anatomy—to help you understand the mechanics of your breath and skeletal system. That awareness has the potential to reduce pain and stress in seated meditation and bring your brain and central nervous system into balance.

January 28: Spinal Alignment

You will learn the anatomy of the spine from a practical perspective. How can you balance the curves of your spine to allow deeper relaxation in meditation? How can you relax muscles that may be over or under used? How can you find comfort in sitting? How this alignment is related to the movement of your breath?

February 4: The Pelvis and Hip Joints

The pelvis is the foundation of your body when sitting. By understanding its sensations and anatomy, you will understand how it supports your spine, and work with the question of finding the optimal seated posture for yourself, whether on a pillow, a chair, or meditation bench. This will also be an introduction to the muscles and bones that contribute to the smooth flow of your breath.

Mark Taylor has attended Wednesday meditation at the Pittsburgh Buddhist Center for many years. He directs the Center for BodyMindMovement, which provides certification programs in Somatic Movement Education, located in Pittsburgh PA, Eugene OR, and Mexico City. He has been influenced by his history as a dancer, choreographer, and dance company director, inspired by being the parent of a developmentally disabled son, and supported by thirty-seven years of meditation practice. He is a board member of the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association (ISMETA).
